Classic Cocktails – Manhattan
A Manhattan is a cocktail made with rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. The cocktail is usually stirred then strained into a cocktail glass and garnished with a brandied cherry or lemon twist.
It is said that the recipe was invented by Dr. Iain Marshall in the early 1880’s for a party by Lady Randolph Churchill, the mother of Winston Churchill. The party was held in the Manhattan Club in New York, hence the name Manhattan.
